This place is another amazing Florida stop!
The steps up to the top of the lighthouse provided a beautiful entry to the solitary life of the keeper. The sea breeze, let in by windows that became more numerous as we spiraled upward, made the climb comfortable, despite a bit of effort needed to make it up the 200+ steps. Once at the top, the view was spectacular.
You will also find that their gift shop is very well stocked. During our visit I picked up some great items that were on sale.
Good place to visit. Hiking trails available which includes fun "treasure hunts" to look for. Concession stands around the facility including A/C rooms where you can look at displays and hang out for a bit. Lighthouse is great and rewarding once you make it to the top. Overpriced in my opinion, but overall good.
“Real Life History Lesson”
Although somewhat nervous and regretful that he wore flip-flops, my grandson climbed all 219 stairs to the top. With his own camera, he photographed views of northeast Florida as we went around the catwalk. He also enjoyed the artifacts and interactive boards in the light-keepers home.
The focal point, however, was clearly the lighthouse and keepers quarters. The keeper's home was very well restored, and did a nice job of showing the life of the families who lived in the island, separated from the mainland.
If you’re looking to go for photos or to experience a lighthouse this is your one to pick over other such as ponce de Leon inlet lighthouse. The entrance is again very reasonable for this visit ($20 for 2 adults). There is so much to offer and perfect for the kiddos. There was a wedding going on also so apparently you can get married also. Parking is easy and everyone is super nice. Don’t forget to grab a beer on the way through
St. Augustine boasts of being the “Nations Oldest Port City.” The inviting black, white wrap around stripes and bright red cupola are a visual treat as you approach the lighthouse from the road. Standing 165 ft. above sea level, the 1874 light tower and the 1876 keepers house is a wonderful testament to the efforts of all its volunteers that maintain its beauty.
This is a cool place if you are interested in maritime history. The grounds are very nicely laid out; with play area for kids, exhibits, walking trail and of course the lighthouse.
Overall: For those who are lovers of lighthouses’ like I am, this is worth the stop.
At the time of this writing, tickets for adults were 12.95 and 10.95 for children 12 and under.(No AAA discounts) There is a park across the street if you need a break or want to picnic.
I took my wife to the lighthouse on our anniversary trip, and we really enjoyed our experience. The buildings and grounds were well maintained and attractively decorated. I enjoy history, but would not consider myself an aficionado of naval history. The museum did a great job of telling a compelling story to hold my interest.
My nine-year-old grandsons birthday road trip ended on a grand note. I decided that another history lesson was in store so I took an unplanned trip to St. Augustine, Florida. The lighthouse and maritime museum at this location was one of first in the many lighthouses I have visited over the course of nineteen years. I wanted him to experience the history and climb for himself.
Climbing inside the 165 ft lighthouse, can be challenging if you are afraid of heights but the veiw from the top is breathtaking and is well worth it.
The exhibits on naval history, focusing on local industry like shrimping, gave a nice view into the turn of the 20th century. I enjoyed the ship building exhibits. The afternoon to detail and the finish of the boats built by volunteers was impressive.
